How to create an account

To be a contributor to the wiki, you must register as a user.
It's very simple (and of course free) to create an account. Just click on the "Log in/create account" link in the top right corner of any page. You can choose any user name, but please consider using your real name. For example, Kent Fiala's user name is Kent Fiala. In any case please do fill in your real name in the separate space provided for that. Wikipedia has some things to say about Choosing a username–note that there has been much more contentiousness on Wikipedia than we should expect here in the Carolina Bird Club. Usernames are case-sensitive, and the first letter is automatically capitalized.
Create a password for your account. Passwords are stored securely on the server; however they are not encrypted in your browser. Therefore it is a good idea to choose a special password just for the wiki; don't use the same password that you use for, say, online financial transactions. Like usernames, passwords are case-sensitive.
Registering your email address is required. Your address will not be displayed anywhere on the site. The wiki needs your email address so that you can use the "E-mail password" function (to have a new password emailed to you if you forget yours), create a watchlist, or receive messages from other users. You can choose to disable receiving email from other users while still keeping the other email functions. When you complete your registration by clicking on "Create Account", the wiki will send an email to the address that you specified. You must respond by following the directions in the email to confirm that you have received it before you are fully registered and permitted to edit pages. This requirement is to keep anonymous spammers from vandalizing the site.
The space for "nickname" is for specifying a name other than your user name that will appear in your signature on talk pages. A nickname is optional and again, it is best not to hide behind a nickname, but it's up to you.
Any time after you have created an account and logged in, you will notice that there are some different links at the top right of all pages. One of these is "my preferences" and you can click on that to change your password, update your email address, change your nickname, etc., as well as set a variety of options.
