Northern Bobwhite

There is a general belief, backed up by count results, that Northern Bobwhite populations have declined dramatically in the Carolinas. A common explanation is that the decline is due to land use changes.

However some have argued that other species that prefer similar habitat have not declined so much as Northern Bobwhite, suggesting that there is some other explanation. A possible explanation that has been put forth is increased mammalian predation. It has also been suggested that the factors interact and that poor habitat quality makes the effect of predation more severe.

Fire ants have been suggested as a factor in South Carolina, but are not sufficiently widespread to have been a factor in North Carolina.
