Ridge Junction Overlook is located in Black Mountain Gap at milepost 355.8 on the Blue Ridge Parkway. It is next to the intersection of the parkway with NC 128, the road to Mount Mitchell State Park locator map. The ridge of the Black Mountains joins the Blue Ridge at this point. The valley between the two ridges has a north-south orientation and funnels southbound migrants over the overlook, making it an excellent location for fall birding. Birding here is best from late August into early October. On a good day, hundreds of birds may pass through.

The elevation here is 5160 ft and early-morning temperatures can be cool, so a light jacket may be advisable even in late August.

The only facilities nearby are at Mount Mitchell State Park, where there is a restaurant and restrooms.
