CBC Bonus Trip—Panama, 15–21 January 2018

Itinerary

The Carolina Bird Club is pleased to offer a “bonus field trip” to central and western Panama!

Toucans, trogons, pairs of emerald green Amazon parrots, the lovely Blue Cotinga, comfortable accommodations, brilliant weather, and a customized birding itinerary for you and a small group of your fellow Carolina Bird Club friends.

Sound great? Then join us for a 6-night 7-day adventure in the crown jewel of Central America, Panama. Boasting stable government, surging economic growth, excellent infrastructure, and more skyscrapers per square mile than Miami, Panama offers some of the best tropical birding in the hemisphere, thanks in large part to the extensive habitat protected along the former Canal Zone. We'll take advantage of the modern roads, easy air access, and comfortable hotels while enjoying daily guided birding to some of the most famous birding sites in Panama.

Our trip, scheduled for Monday, January 15 through Sunday, January 21, visits internationally famous sites like Pipeline Road, Gamboa, and Metropolitan Park near Panama City, then transitions to the country's western highlands for goodies like Resplendent Quetzal, perhaps Central America's most iconic bird. For birder's who attended our prior offering to Panama, this trip offers the opportunity to explore the western highlands and an entirely new suite of birds. For everyone else, the ability to visit both central and western Panama should generate an impressive list of birds (and mammals!)

This trip will be fully guided by local guides with deep and extensive knowledge of Panama's birdlife. Transportation is via dedicated minibus, with an intra-country flight between Panama City and David included in the trip price. By taking the 50 minute flight, we save 8 hours of driving each way… and get more time to bird!

In order to ensure that all participants have personalized attention, this trip is limited to 7 participants. The trip fee of $2,100 covers land transportation, including airport transfers, 6-nights double accommodation, intra-country roundtrip flight, entrance fees, guided birding each day, bottled water daily, and breakfast, lunch, and dinner on each day other than arrival and departure.

Not included are airfare to Panama City (PTY), alcoholic beverages, meals not indicated, gratuities, and items of a personal nature. Those wishing for single rooms pay an additional $240. A passport valid for six months from the date of travel is suggested. Visas are not required for US citizens. No immunizations are required for travel to Panama, but as with any travel, check with your doctor for individual recommendations. Panama uses the US dollar as currency; no conversion to local currency is required.

We are visiting at perhaps the best time of the year, the dry season, with most days likely to feature blue skies and puffy white clouds. While we can't rule out showers, especially when visiting the highlands, this trip is scheduled to take advantage of the year's best average birding weather.

Act now to reserve your spot on what promises to be an exciting and rewarding exploration of Panama's avifauna. A deposit of $800 is due by November 1 with the balance due December 18. Six participants are required to run the trip. In the event that we are unable to fill six slots by 12/18, your final payment and/or deposit will be returned to you. For more information, including a detailed itinerary, or to reserve your spot, contact Steve Shultz at 919-608-2069, 919-629-7226, or sshultz@nc.rr.com. Please do not remit any money now. Interested participants must first secure a confirmed spot, and receive additional information including registration forms prior to remitting your deposit.
