A few decades ago, the Solitary Vireo was split into three species -- from east to west the Blue-headed, the Plumbeous, and the Cassin's. The two more western species seldom have been reported in the eastern half of North America, and thus a complete shock was the spotting and photographing of a Plumbeous Vireo in NC in 2023. And even more surprising was that it was an actively singing male, on the odd "late spring" date of 7 Jun [Chat 87:80 link]. The bird was found on Colington Island (Dare) and was seen and photographed by a handful of birders, though it was not relocated on following days. The report has yet to be reviewed by the NC BRC, but three photos are on the Carolina Bird Club Photo Gallery, as well as on several eBird reports. |
