Empidonax
Species: Empidonax
Photographer: Kyle Kittelberger
Date: 15 September 2015
Location: near Falls Lake State Park, NC
This bird was part of a mixed species flock. It was perched in direct sunlight, so the bird is slightly overexposed light wise in the pics. Features of note for the flycatcher: a yellowish-green back and head, bold white complete eye-ring, yellowish collar extending onto throat (the breast was yellowish-white, the darker yellow collar stood out), small size (this was noticeable during observation), a small orange bill, rounded head with slight peak, and a very short and narrow tail. It was also pumping its tail several times.
Originally identified as Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, some viewers have felt that it is more likely Acadian.
