Eastern Bluebird
Species: Eastern Bluebird
Photographer: Tammy Barbour
Date: 26 June 2014
Location: Wilmington, NC
Other species: Southern Flying Squirrel
This predatory creature ate all but one of four eggs. It was the second brood and we were on Day 6 of incubation. Have never had this happen before. The mama bluebird kept flying back and forth peeking in at 0630. I went to check and found this. So sad. The bluebirds are still in the area, but only the male and the juveniles from the previous brood. Mama Bluebird has likely abandoned the remaining egg.
