Wilson's Snipe
Species: Wilson's Snipe

A very poor photo, for the purpose of documentation. Seen well before it flushed, as it was probing the mud at the edge of a grassy island in the retention pond, behind the airport terminal near Williams Road×Airline Drive. I have driven by this pond countless times, as it is on the only route to get from my home to downtown New Bern while completely avoiding traffic on US-70. I did not start seeing birds at this pond until this past summer, after the construction of a traffic circle at the site. Wilson's Snipe is the 5th species I have observed at this pond, and it is only the 3rd Wilson's Snipe I have seen in Craven County (first/Lifer with Lower Neuse Bird Club behind NC History Center downtown New Bern, Jan. 13, 2018, spotted at the edge of the marshes on far side of Trent River by Les Coble; second at Martin Marietta Park, New Bern, with Ronnie Hewlette on April 7th, 2018).
