Photos taken by Chris Wilson and provided by Juan Valadez. Photographed 14 September 2017 at 3:30pm north of Charleston and just south of Mclellanville. The bird was feeding in a spartina marsh between two spoil islands on the east side of the Intracoastal Waterway in the Cape Romain Wildlife Refuge. Chris was in a boat on the Intracoastal when he saw it.
There are numerous previous records of American Flamingo, as well as Chilean Flamingo, in the Carolinas, all prior to 1987, but none have been considered to be wild birds. This individual could be a wild bird blown in by the recent passage of Hurricane Irma.
