The Carolina Bird Club, Inc., is a non-profit educational and scientific association open to anyone interested in the study and conservation of wildlife, particularly birds.

The Club meets each winter, spring, and fall at different locations in the Carolinas. Meeting sites are selected to give participants an opportunity to see many different kinds of birds. Guided field trips and informative programs are combined for an exciting weekend of meeting with people who share an enthusiasm and concern for birds.

The Club offers research grants in avian biology for undergraduate and graduate students, and scholarships for young birders.

The Club publishes two print publications (now also available online). The Chat is a quarterly ornithological journal that contains scientific articles, reports of bird records committees and bird counts, and general field notes on bird sightings. CBC Newsletter is published bimonthly and includes birding articles and information about meetings, field trips, and Club news.

The Club provides this website to all for free.

Hello, this is a March 8 update of the Carolina Rare Bird Alert featuring birding news from North and South Carolina sponsored by the Carolina Bird Club. Highlights on this report include:

"WESTERN" TYPE FLYCATCHER
WESTERN TANAGER
CACKLING GOOSE
ROSS'S GOOSE
GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE
SANDHILL CRANES

A "WESTERN" FLYCATCHER is being seen at Congaree National Park near Columbia, SC. The bird has been dependable at the old hunt clubhouse at the intersection of the Sims Trail and the Weston Lake Loop Trail, just before the bridge over Cedar Creek. This bird does call so hopefully it can eventually be identified to species. Congratulations to Robin Carter for finding this exciting bird.

An immature male WESTERN TANAGER is coming to a feeder near York, SC. Contact Kelly Adkins at 803-628-6967 or chezsmom2003@yahoo.com.

Santee NWR in SC has hosted ROSS'S GOOSE, CACKLING GOOSE, and GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE at the Bluff Unit of that refuge. Look from the Nature Trail overlook at Craney Bay for the geese.

Four SANDHILL CRANES continue to be seen in Beaufort, NC. Contact John Fussell at jfuss@clis.com for details on where to look for the birds.

A wintering WILSON'S PLOVER was seen at Fort Macon in NC on March 3. Look around the berm at the inlet at high tide. The plover associates with a large group of Semipalmated Sandpipers.

Thanks this week to Robin Carter, Bill Hilton and John Fussell for their calls and reports. Some of this information was gleaned from Carolinabirds.
